Nail the Indiana Notary Public 2026 Exam – Make It Official!

A notary public's primary role is to act as an impartial witness during the signing of documents and to authenticate those signatures. When it comes to preparing legal documents for compensation, this involves providing legal advice or services, which goes beyond the notary's responsibilities and can lead to the unauthorized practice of law. Notaries are not licensed attorneys and cannot charge for legal preparation, as this could potentially harm the public by offering services they are not qualified to provide.

The other activities listed, while they do have specific considerations, do not involve the same legal prohibitions. Notarizing documents for family members is allowed as long as the notary remains impartial and follows the appropriate guidelines. Acting as a witness to a document is within a notary's duties as long as the process is followed correctly. Providing certification of copies is also a permissible action under certain circumstances, further illustrating that notaries can assist with document verification tasks. However, preparation of legal documents for compensation clearly crosses the boundaries of a notary's legally defined role.
